New Year Off to Fantastic Start
The Western Region Academy visit to Netball Bay of Plenty has proved to be nothing short of fantastic according to Bay of Plenty Coach Carol Holt and WRAS CEO Nancy Haslop. "Every year whether we are in Australia or in New Zealand the outcome is always the same new friendships are forged and the standard of each group of players gets better," said Nancy. " This exchange which began in January 2005 with the Bay players coming to us has been a resounding success."

For Bay of Plenty's Exchange Programme Coordinator Jodi Tod the excitement begins with the new group of players from which 12 will be chosen to go to Bathurst in 2013. "Our players are working really hard and it will be good to see how they perform over the upcoming season in their school and our rep teams."

East Reynella Visit Proves Positive
The East Reynella High School (Adelaide) visit to the Bay of Plenty was a great way for the new squad preparing for the Western Region Academy's (Bathurst) arrival in January. The 24 players from Adelaide along with the three coaching staff gained a great deal from their visit. The two Reynella sides played matches against Trident, Otumoetai, and Aquinas before spending time training with and playing against the Bay of Plenty Squad. Jodi Tod was quite taken aback with the comments that the Australians found the Bay of Plenty teams quite physical. "This was a real surprise for us to hear," said Jodi, "but for Reynella netball is only beginning to grow in the school and this was an opportuntiy that was seen as part of their ongoing growth and development.

Service to Sport Recognized at Annual Awards
Madelon Izett was recognized for the huge contribution that she has made to netball in Whakatane at both club and centre level. Twenty seven years as Treasurer is no mean feat when you consider this was during the shift to the new courts and the bbuilding of a new pavilion.

"This is just amazing, thanks so much,"said a surprised Madelon. "It is really awesome." Madelon was one of several people chosen from a range of sports to win this prestigious Sport Bay of Plenty Award.

Bay of Plenty Gold Win Team of the Year
The annual Bay of Plenty Polytechnic Sport Bay of Plenty awards saw Bay of Plenty Gold take out team of the year. Thjis was a huge surprise for all involved with the side and netball in the region.

Bay of Plenty Gold were chosen as winners because of the rapid rise that they had made to find themselves placed third in New Zealand in the provincial champiosnhips. This was yet another historic win for the the side who were promoted from second division in 2010.

"This is just fantastic for netball," said coach Mary jane Araroa. "We are all extremely proud of our achievement this year and this is the icing on the cake. Just so cool."

Coach Scholarship For Araroa
Mary Jane Araroa has been awarded a Bay Trust Coach Scholarship for the upcoming year. Having coached the Bay of Plenty Gold Team to reach number three in the country Mary Jane is keen to continue her growth and development as a coach. She will be joined by Jodi Tod at the upcoming Netball New Zealand event being held in Dunedin for coahces and umpires.

Mary Jane Araroa has an impressive coaching CV that dates back to National Bank Cup days when she was coach of the Northern Force. Apart form the Bay of Plenty's top side she coached the Aotearoa Secondary Schools Team this year in the Trans Tasman Secondary Schools event.

Umpire Successes Keep Coming
Five umpires recently passed their New Zealand Theory Examination. They were Alice Mc Fall (pictured), Stephanie Nash, Jenny Rozendaal, Joanne Thompson from Harbourside Netball Centre and Aroha Matthews from Whakatane.

This is the final of the three theory papers that have to be sat by umpires as they progress through the each level. Umpires begin with the New Zealand Centre Theory and then must be assessed in a practical stage to become a NZ Centre Award Umpire. The next stage is the NZ Regional Theory and practical assessment and next comes the New Zealand level Theory and practical.

"This is an outstanding set of results," said Lyndsay Meads. "The Centre Tutors have done a great job helping these people to pass this theroy exam. Wendy Sinclair at Harbourside and Louise Macdonald at Whakatane, both volunteers, take this role very seriously and give many hours to preparing their candidates."

New World Netball Awards A Fantastic Night
The Netball Bay of Plenty New World Netball Awards were a fantastic night with so many outstanding achievements recognized. "We have had such a great year with the Bay of Plenty Gold, the Under 19's and the Lois Muir Challenge Squad all finishing third in their respective national events. This shows that what has been going on underneath is working well. Then if you look at the number of umpires accredited at the Centre & Regional level you see how much work the Centres and the NBOP Umpire programmes are covering. Rosina Powdrell achieving her New Zealand Umpires Award give us another top flight umpire. Beryl Harvey has given a lot of time to being a Bench Official and while this was recognised with a National New World Volunteer Offical Award she deserves congratulations from us as well for her wotk and appointment to World Netball Championships. Lucy Whale was selected as the New World Youth Volunteer and on it goes. Well done to all," said Board Chair Shirley Baker.

Whakatane Netball Centre won the Office Max Centre of the Year. President Diane Waititi was also one of the two Cotton Traders Volunteer of the Year. In her speech Diane made it very clear that it is teamwork whether within the Centre or working with the region. All play an important part.

BOP Gold Reach Number Three in the Country
Few would have given Bay of Plenty Gold a chance in their new top six berth but undaunted by the task before them Coach Mary Jane Araroa and Physio Roger Athy-Knibbs began their planning with the other NBOP coaches on January 6. Fitness and conditioning commenced early and players were managed carefully over the following months through the Lois Muir Challenge and Under 19's.

"We were absolutley committed and determined to be in the Top Four and so we wanted to win three matches in pool play to ensure a top four finish. However, we relied in the result of the Auckland Waitakere versus Southland match to secure our final pool play ranking. We wanted to be playing the second/third semi but it was not to be," said Coach Mary Jane Araroa. "The absolute determination the to beat Wellington to finsih third emerged from the team. They had a confidence that they could win and win they did."

"To be here to witness this historic win has been just so exciting," said Board Chair Shirley Baker. "This makes it third in Lois Muir Challenge; third in Under 19's; and third in Lion Foundation. Just great for Bay of Plenty."

Arahi Wall Named In Tournament Team
Arahi Wall has gradually gained confidence as a player in the Bay of Plenty Gold under the direction of coach Mary Jane Araroa. Having only had a brief cameo as a Magic player in this year's ANZ Championship it is believed that Wall has yet to hit her straps.

Arahi's selection into the Lion Foundation Tournament Team was the result of consistent shooting success throughout the event and strong support from the players around her in Bay of Plenty Gold. "Arahi has improved over this campaign which has been a real positive for her. It is good to see her gaining more stature as a senior player," said Coach Mary Jane Araroa.

Samantha Sinclair Named in NNZ Emerging Talent Squad
Samantha Sinclair has taken every opportunity to grow as a netball player since she attended her first Summer Camp. Her selection into the NNZ Emerging Talent Squad gives her yet another chance to learn, train and develop at the next level. "This is an incredible achievement for this Year 11 student who had a great experience in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Team this year," said Jodi Tod. "Sam has had a big year having made the Bay of Plenty Lois Muir Challenge Squad, the New Zealand Secondary Schools Team, and playing in our Under 19 Team. We are delighted with what she has achieved this year."

First Win in Top Six For Gold
Bay of Plenty Gold had their first win in the Top Six against Southland.

Coach Mary Jane Araroa is pleased with the progress that the Gold side are making. "The Canterbury game taught us what being in Top Six was all about. Southland have been there and know how to mentally wear you down and to withstand the physical pressure. Captain Jodi Tod played extremely well. We were down by 7 goals with four minutes to go in the second quarter. Tanya Lund called time out and this was a smart thing to do as it gave us the chance to compose ourselves. We took the opportunity and returned to raise our intensity levels and came back to be one goal behind at half time. We never looked back from there. We played strongly despite the physical nature of the last quarter and now know we can step up in this environment."

The nextmatch is against Wellington on Sunday 18th at 11am.

NZ AIMS SEES YOUNGSTERS SHINE
The NZ AIMS Tournament proved to be a toughie for the teams from the Bay of Plenty. Making it into the top 16 was a huge challenge and of the schools competing from the Region the best result was 5th for Mount Maunganui Intermediate who were winners in the inaugural year. "The growth has seen the competition get tougher each year and the draw becomes more cut throat," said Jodi Tod.

There were four players from Bay of Plenty chosen in the Tournament Team - Emily Johnston (Bethlehem College), Shelby Peacock (Tauranga Intermediate) and Raquel Leopold and Emerson Tod (Mount Maunganui Intermediate). The selectors looked for consistency across all games and for some players in this age group that is a big challenge. "It is apparent that there are some very talented players at this level but they only play when they want to play and so let themselves and their teams down," said CEO Sheryl Dawson. "This is a problem we encounter often at the Under 15 level. Consistency of intensity is needed in teams competing in tournaments."

First Match at TECT Arena at BayPark Goes Off
With close to 2000 people in the new TECT Arena at BayPark the crowd noise was phenomenal. This helped the Bay of Plenty Gold Team to stay in the match against Canterbury up until half time. The championship quarter as it is known saw the Bay side unable to sustain the pressure of the previous two quarters and so the Canterbury side who have played together for some time just completely dominated. The final quarter saw the Bay side lose that stanza by one goal but the gap was never closed.

"We all will take a great deal of learning from that game," said Coach Mary Jane Araroa, "and that means coaches and players. We have plenty to work on at our trainings and we will certainly be far better for this experience."

The next match is in Gore against Southland.

Upper North Island Secondary Schools Netball A Huge Success
Netball Bay of Plenty hosted the 96 team event at Harbourside Netball Centre. There were a number of successes for the Region for both teams and individuals.

Trident High School rose from top of B Grade to eighth in A Grade which is quite phenomenal given that there are 32 teams in eachgrade and the side had a number of Under 15 players. Bethlehem College performed well in B Grade finishing third after a heartbreaking one goal loss in the semi final. John Paul College lost the final of C Grade by one goal in extra time. It was also positive to see other schools from around the Bay of Plenty competing well enough to remain in their current divisions and largely close to the top half of their grade.

When it came to individuals Tayla Blanchard, Elizabeth Drake and Samantha Sinclair were all selected in the Top 24 Players of the Tournament, which is no mean feat given that there are over 1000 players at the event. Further to that Tayla Blanchard was named as the Shooter of B Grade and so she joined Sally Davenport and Elizabeth Drake to be named in the Top Ten Players of B Grade. In the C Grade Samantha Sinclair was named as the midcourter and Chelsea Fox the defender. Both were named in the Top Ten.

The outcomes for teams and individuals has demonstrated the value of the hours of hard work that are put into players and secondary schools within the Region.

Bay of Plenty Polytech Baywide Secondary Schools
The 2011 Bay of Polytech Baywide Secondary School Tournament was a superb event and while Trident had an easy run to the final it did not guarantee them the right to claim the champions title without a hard fought match against Rotorua Girls High School. The 14 goal win in the pool play rounds counted for nothing. The young Rotorua side got off to a great start and led 7 to 4 at the end of the first quarter. This was quite a fright for Trident who were spurred into action and had come back to level the scores at half time at 12 all. From that point it was a goal for goal affair and a much relieved Te Ahuru Waititi saw her team win gold 19 to 17.

Bethlehem College took the bronze by defeating Tauranga Girls 27 to 19.

Baywide Year 8
The Baywide Year 8 was played in very demanding conditions at the hrbourside Netball Centre where four seasons were experienced in one day.The event is used to not only find the Baywide Champions but also help the teasms in their preparation for the NZ AIMS Tournament.

The Bethlehem College Year 8 side proved to be the best on finals day with a strong 26 to 17 win to take the gold over Te Puke Intermediate who have won the tournament a number of times. The bronze medal went to Whakatane Intermediate who held Mount Maunganui Intermediate out in a closely contested match to win 29 to 28.

Juliana Naoupu in Silver Ferns Squad
Juliana Naoupu came to the Bay of Plenty in November last year to join the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic Team for the 2011 ANZ Championships and immersed herself in work for Netball Bay of Plenty. "Juliana has won a lot of praise for her role as coach of the Under 15 Development Team who competed recently at the Tournament in Taranaki and her coaching of young players all around the region from Opotiki to Lake Rerewhakaitu to Gate Pa in Tauranga. She was also a key part of the success of the Cornerstone Club's win in the recent Contract Mechanical Services Baywide," said Sheryl Dawson. "Naturally there are a number of young players and their parents along with all of the Board and all of her work and team mates who are absolutely delighted for Juliana. She is a fantasitc role model."

Being a member of the Silver Ferns Squad will see Juliana given a chance at the upcoming camp in September to show the national selectors how far she has come since the ANZ Championships as a player.

Under 17 Premier Shaky Start Costly
The under 17 premier team went into the national Under 17 Tournament without a lot of game time. The first day saw a very shaky start with two losses that proved to be very expensive overall. Day two was a different story with two really good wins and the team gaining a level of self belief that was much needed. "There were a number of changes to the defensive end as a result of players not meeting the fitness and team expectations which was disappointing and while Kirsten Mackay and Ariana Moffat were first class replacements neither had had the much needed training time with the team and both had to step up from Under 15 experiences which is a big ask,"said Jodi Tod. "There were players who had never played in a rep team and to go straight into a very competitive environment proved very challenging." The team finished in the middle of the pack which was not what was hoped for but there was certainly a lot of learning for all.

Under 19's Finish Third at NZ Age Group Championships
Teresa Pou (Coach) and Nicky Dobbs (Manager) arrived at the Tauranga Airport with their with their faces beaming and a group of very tired but happy players. "The girls played so well all week. We finished on such a high by beating Christchurch 42 to 33 to come third," said Nicky Dobbs. "We have a certificate to prove our placing." The welcome home from parents and family was a warm one.

This is the highest ever placing that the region has had at this level of competition. "Finishing 5th in 2010 to then take the next step to third is really fantastic."

The team shooters saw strong percentages achieved over the four day tournament with Goal Shooters Jaydene Law(86%) and Tayla Blanchard(81%) both reaching over the 80% and Goal Attacks Harley Smith (76%) and Simmon Howe (75%) in the mid 70% range.

The defence saw Amy Christophers in her last year at this age level pull in some great intercepts and she was well supported by Libby Drake, Chelsea Fox and Leah Maru Maru Flynn in the circle.

While midcourters Lyddia Moke, Samantha Sinclair and Toia Tiwha all contributed to what was truly a team effort.

Final Results For Two Under 17 Development Teams Pleased Coaches
The two Under 17 Development Teams played in the annual North Harbour Tournament. The teams are selcted to be as evenly matched as possible. The two coaches Maria Oxenham (Gold) and Te Ahuru Waititi (Blue) were delighted with the success that they had with their teams and the final rankings achieved. Gold finished fourth and Blue fifth. "This has been an awesome experience and just so enjoyable," they both said on arrival home. "The players have worked hard and learnt a great deal and with Renee Penny selected in the Tournament team an added bonus."

Under 15 Results Pleasing
The four Netball Bay of Plenty Under 15 Teams and the Centre teams from Whakatane, Te Puke, and Rotorua all enjoyed varying levels of success at the recent Taranaki Under 15 Tournament. The Premier side coached by Sharmaine Butnting finished 8th and while the coach was disappointed with the final ranking for many of the players this was their first time playing in the top division at this event. Georgia Grace impressed with her consistency at Goal Defence in this side. The Gold Team coached by Lucy Whale finished 6th in their division with Tyla Welsh performing well in the shooting circle. The Blue team co coached by Raewyn Harvey and Teegan Schneller were delighted with the impact that Emma Jarvis had on the team and "we were so pleased to see her grow with every game". Juliana Naoupu's very young Development Team had a lot learn and all will be better for the experience. "Grace Diggleman from Katikati College had three 100% games which was just awesome and Alice Thompson's doggedness on defence was to be admired."

Under 17 Development Teams Seeing Success
The Under 17 Blue & Gold Teams have both had wins at the North Harbour event. Both teams had wins over the two Australian teams competing at the event which put a spring in their steps! The Gold side had a 47 all draw against North Harbour in a hard fought match and beat Mangonui by three goals while Blue lost to North and Auckland. Both teams go into the play offs for final positions.

NBOP Under 19's Have Three Good Wins
The Under 19 Team competing at the Netball New Zealand Age Group Championships in Nelson have notched up three good wins to date. Their wins over Auckland Waitakere 2 (40 to 24), Manawatu (43 to 17) and Taranaki (51 to 24) have given them the chance to go into the top eight of the draw.

"It has been great to see the team play so well no matter what combination is played during the match," said Jodi Tod. Coach Teresa Pou is very pleased with the performances to date but going into the next round "the challenge is to take the big step up to the next level. The really tough competition will happen from now on."

Contract Mechanical Services Grand Final a Game of Two Halves
Whakarewarewa Reds looked set to achieve the elusive goal of winning the Contract Mechanical Services Baywide Open given their dominance in pool play and their perfectly timed run in the semi earlier in the day against a very amped Ngongotaha. However, Cornerstone had other ideas despite being without star defender Ursula (Billy) Pritchard.

The first quarter saw an evenly matched contest ending at 13 all. Whaka burst into life in the second quarter and looked likely winners as Cornerstone had no answers to the quickly gained momentum that saw Whaka lead 26 to 20 at the half. The third or championship quarter saw both sides make changes with Cornerstone's working strongly by quickly removing the tenuous one goal lead Whaka held with a quick 4 goals sunk by Juliana Naoupu who was well supported by GS Lee Bartlett. Teegan Schneller (in action in the goal circle in the photo)who had just entered the game at GD and been part of the quick scoring turnovers injured her foot and had to leave the game. This did not appear to phase Cornerstone as much as it did Whaka and so the Tauranga based side pushed on to close the gap scoring 16 goals to the Rotorua sides 9.

The final quarter saw Cornerstone have four more shots and this was thanks to the turnover ball secured by Candyce Edwards and the shortest GD ever Tawari Butler. The 50 to 45 win to Cornerstone saw Whakarewarewa Reds yet again feel the pain of defeat in what could have been their year to break the seven year drought.

In the Championship Bronze medal match Ngongotaha defeated Mount Sports one 48 to 44. Mount Sports played a strong match to be this close but the disappointment of the one goal loss in the semi earlier in the day had clearly taken the shine off the day for Ngongotaha.

In the Plate Final Poroporo were too strong for Mount Sports Two and won 62 to 34. Sports Opotiki took the bronze.

Contract Mechanical Services Baywide Semi Final A Cliff Hanger
The Finals Day got off to a great start with the Ngongotaha crowd growing with every goal in their semi final match up against arch rivals Whakarewarewa Reds. Bursting out to a three goal lead at the end of the first quarter Ngongotaha's confidence was running high. By half time the determination and drive of the defensive dynamo Gaby Adams who won a number of intercepts and rebounds along with defensive work from Goal Attack Hayley Ratima and WD Awhina Savage saw the maroons leading 22 to 16.

The match was a feisty one at times but during the third quarter Whaka's changes had an impact with Laura Macdonald shifting from Centre to WD, Melissa Ruru moving from GD to Centre and Ladette Bradnock coming off the bench to GD. These changes settled the pool play winners back into a rhythm that saw them claw back the 6 goal half time deficit to win the third quarter by 8 goals and so go into the final quarter two goals ahead.

The final fifteen minutes were a humdinger as the ball moved up and down the court at speed often two or three times before a goal was scored by either side. As the quarter came to a close it appeared as if extra time would be a reality, howevr, Ngongotaha could not sink the goal they needed and Whaka won 39 to 38. In the other semi final Cornerstone cruised to a 63 to 47 win over Mount Sports 1. Juliana Naoupu had a 93% shooting average playing half at GA and the other at GS. This was the best average over the day.

Bay Age Group Teams Pre Event Successes
The Under 19, 3 Under 17's and 4 Under 15's all gained a great deal out of their day at the Waikato Age Group Event. The Under 19 Team won their group quite convincingly with Coach Teresa Pou delighted with each players performance and the resutls that the team produced. "The Under 19’s had a fantastic tournament. We comfortably won our three matches. And won our grade."
44-19 against Waikato Black
45-14 against Counties Manukau
39-26 against Waikato Red.
"Every girl played at least 1.5 games and I was able to change combinations and play my worst case scenarios. (which you can see by the scores were not that bad) Nicky Dobbs (Team Manager) and I were extremely proud of the girls achievements yesterday. They all played out of their skins giving 100%, this has given the girls a bit of a boost going into the National tournament as they now know what they are capable of if they stick to our game plan,"said Teresa. (Pictured are Simmon Howe & Harley Smith from the Under 91's).

A number of other teams had great results as well on a day that is all about sorting out combinations and getting the players ready for their events.

Contract Mechanical Services Baywide Hotting Up
As the pool play round draws nearer to an end it looks likely that Whaka Red and Cornerstone have set themselves up nicely leading into the Finals Day on July 16 at the Mount Action Centre. The question is who will emerge as number one on July 12 to set themselves up for the easier run into the Championship Finals. Both teams boast experienced and talented players with Whaka Red having Erena Mikaere coming out of her first year with the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic and the likes of Halana Leith, Laura Macdonald and Melissa Ruru all adding to the quality of the line up. Cornerstone have Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic GA Juliana Naoupu and along with Billy Pritchard and Kahurangi Waititi in defence they also look strong.

Mount Sports One sit in a clear third with Ngongotaha, Paroa Panthers and Poroporo all vying for that number four spot the next two weeks look so exciting.

Division Two is also similar with three teams locked closely together - Mount Sports 2, Marist Shakers, and Trident School. Only one of these teams will get to contest the Plate Final. "This is the best contest that we have had in a while," said CEO Sheryl Dawson, "and it is hoped that the Finals Day produces an exciting finish to what has been a very interesting competition."

Baywide Open Results - July 4

The Best Netball Photo Ever
The great thing about netball in our communities is that it is a game for players of all shapes(height and width), sizes and ages. This photo was taken at the Opotiki Netball Centre by an interested by stander and has won applause from so many who have seen it. The questions this one photo has generated is what has makes netball what it is?

Youngsters love to play they do not see the same barriers that players do as they get older. These young ones just want to be there, be part of the team, and wear the uniform or the playing bib. The rest to them does not matter. Another case of I was there and it meant every thing to me!

Contract Mechanical Services Baywide Sees Polished Play
Ngongotaha Premiers played Sports Opotiki in a match where the Opotiki side never gave up and pushed the strong Ngongotaha Team both on attack and on defence. The result saw the Ngongotaha side win 75-24. Shooters Hailey Ratima and Pani Taipeti, combined well, playing a mixture of a holding and running game against to help Ngongotaha's success in the circle. The midcourt combination of Tana Raharuhi, Nadine Stone and Chelsea Retemeyer were seen as an awesome combination. They fed the shooters at any opportunity from all over the court and were staunch on defence breaking the flow of Opotiki's throughcourt play. The defence end with Gaby Adams and Patricia Iasona dominated the circle leaving Opotiki's midcourt with little options to feed their shooters. Nadine Stone worked tirelessly at centre and so would be the player of the match. She controlled the midcourt, moved the ball through court well and was relentless in defence, grabbing some good intercepts and putting pressure on her opposite to force an error.

The Paroa Panthers versus NBOP Under 19 saw some players in unfamiliar positions, superb defense work, and good shooting stats. Tanya Lund began at Goal Defence for Paroa for one quarter and then moved back to her more familiar role of Goal Attack for the next three. Her 80% shooting average was complimented by GS Dee Danya Riddiford's 77%. However, this was not enough to stave off the NBOP Under 19 Team hungry for court time and anxious to get some strong matches under their belts before the NZ Age Group Championships in Nelson.

NBOP Under 19 Tayla Blanchard (pictured)was the shooter of the match recording 42 out of 49 shots giving her an 86% average and Chelsea Fox at GK stood out as the best defender according to the fans watching. The 74 to 40 win to the Under 19's pleased coach Teresa Dobbs who is eager to improve on last years fifth placing.

In the Whakarewarewa Red Mount Sports 1 match Whaka produced on of their best starts to date.
one. The Whaka starting line-up turned over ample ball and the attacking unit managed to capitalize on this ball effectively by scoring the goals. Erena Mikaere GK (player of the match) and Melissa Ruru GD along with
Maryane Gibbs WD and Laura Macdonald Centre created mayhem as a defensive unit. Mount really struggled with the height and pressure they faced from both
Ruru and Mikaere. The Mount played a tight one on one defense marking which at times saw Whaka struggle.Hopwever, another hard fought for Whaka saw the 43 to 18 win with all players taking the court.

In Division Two Marist Shakers managed to notch up another win in a game that saw them take the lead early in the first quarter and retain it through the rest of the game. With some over zealous defence tactics from Poroporo Pahou in the goal circle, it made for some hard work for Marist shooters Vanessa Bates & Jessica Hathaway. Marist Shakers upped their game in the second quarter with their fast pace and accurate passing of the ball from defence Katie Snyman and Jess Meade down to midcourters Jade Hemana, Alison Morgan and Natalie Allan. Overall a tidy game by Marist Shakers with good feeding into the shooters and brilliant defensive and attack work. The final score was 46-37 in favour of the Rotorua side.

Centre Classic Challenge A Cracker
Six out of the 7 Centres compete in this Netball Centre run event annually which began with play over three weekends in June and then was reduced to two as the pressures of time and costs were felt. In 2011 the Centre Classic Challenge was reduced yet again to a one day event and has proved to be a real hit. Held at Netball Whakatane where the rain stopped in time to ensure that the day would be a great one the Year 7, Year 8 and Under 15 Rep Teams had a the honour of not only playing for their team but also their Centres.

Once the points from all matches were tallied the Overall Champions was Netball Rotorua who emerged two points in fromt of Harbourside Rotorua have claimed this title for the last three years. Two points also separated third and fourth with Whakatane on 34 and Te Puke on 32.

The Whakatane Under 15 Team proved to be very dominant at their level defeating most others by subtantial margins. Year 8 saw Harbourside emerge as winners following a close encounter with Rotorua. The 14 to 11 win to Harbourside in this match and the 19 to 17 win Harbourside had against Whakatane illustrates how much closer the Year 8 group were. The Year 7's were won by Rotorua quite convincingly.

A great day was had by all. This is an excellent event that starts youngsters on a competitive development pathway that is proving to be even more demanding of young players if they wish to make the top.

Umpires Success in Theory Examinations
Netball Bay of Plenty commenced it's 'Everyones an Umpire' project in 2002 to raise the standards of those umpiring and create the desire for more people to look at achieving an umpiring qualification. The Project led by Lyndsay Meads was based strongly in the Secondary Schools and has been run alongside the Netball Centre annual programmes for the last 9 years. "What is really exciting is now we have those who sat the NZ Centre Theory over the early years of the Project putting their hands up to become qualified and along with that we have a growing number of young people going beyond the Centre qualification'," said an absolutely delighted CEO Sheryl Dawson. "This month's NZ Regional Theory results are a reflection of the hard work that Centre personnel put into taking those interested to the next level. Their work in this area has made a significant difference to the quality of umpiring within the region and something that they should all be really proud of."

Having 8 people pass at the one time is a record for the Region and bodes well for the future. Harbourside Netball Centre had four pass the recent examination - Courtney Mc Manaway, Ella Duggan, Sophie Futter, and Paige Renwick. Diane Amrein of Katikati will provide a much needed role model for the small rural Centre and Iri Thrupp and Moana Waititi will add to Whakatane's growing stocks of qualified unmpires like Harbourside. Sean Vercoe (pictured) of Rotorua pass has generated the greatest level of excitment given he has not always found the theory as easy as the practical.

Pam Clayton's work at the practical level with the umpires and leadership of the Regional Panel also underpin the outcomes being enjoyed.

"It is always so pleasing when a plan comes together and patience and time have been important with this one," said Dawson.

Contract Mechanical Services Baywide Open Sees High Scoring Matches
The opening round of the Contract Mechanical Services Baywide saw Harbourside Club Cornerstone get off to a strong start against Sports Opotiki with a 71 to 35 win. Mount Sports have come into this years Baywide with a new determination after dipping their toes in the water last year. Their 56 to 49 win over Paroa Panthers was a confidence boosting start to the seven pool play rounds. Whaka Red defeated NBOP Under 17's in an excellent match that saw the youngsters challenged. Coach Megan Lacy felt her young charges played well despite the 62 to 29 scoreline. The Poroporo versus Ngongotaha played in Rotorua match saw Ngongotaha defeat Whakatane's Poroporo 55 to 38.

One Hundred and Fifty Under 15 Triallists
"Fortunately this year we were ready for the large number of youngsters who are now competing for places in the four Under 15 teams that Bay of Plenty runs. The good thing is that they can return to their Centre Team if the Netball Centre runs one," said Player development Officer Arahi Wall.

The process began with a cluster approach - the initial trials were held on the basis of one in Rotorua (Central), one in Whakatane (Eastern) and two in Tauranga (Western). Stage two will see the combination of the Rotorua and Whakatane players from which 25 to 30 players will be selected for the final trial and the combination of the players from the two Western Cluster trials will be treated in the same way.

"From a Netball Bay of Plenty point of view this is exciting because it means that there is strong competition for places in all teams now and we hope that those who miss the cut will show the grit needed to be back again next year."

Bay of Plenty Polytechnic Baywide Under 15 Sees Numerous Close Matches
More schools are looking stronger at this age group level than ever before and so the competition for the top four spots has become much more intense. Trident High School 1 (all blue uniforms in photo)emerged as winners but not without close and challenging matches against Tauranga Girls Junior A who finished second and Rotorua Girls High School who finished third. Otumoetai College who finished fourth would be the school who have made the most significant step up at this age level with a number of their players looking well drilled. The skill level of all four sides was impressive for this age level. "It is clear that the benefits of rep play (competitive development) at both the Regional and the Centre level is beginning to have the desired impact," said Jodi Tod. "The coaches of many of these teams are also being either mentored or attending sessions which is another good thing."

Division Two saw Western Heights High School win with Whakatane second and Tuwharetoa third. Division Three was won by Mount College One with Katikati second. The Katikati team is the best to come out of the school for some time. Bethlehm College 1 were third. Division Four was won by Trident 2 on a count back of goals from Mount Maunganui 2, with Tauranga Girls College 9 A third.

The Bay of Plenty Polytechnic Baywide played over two weekends is a superb way to start the season for schools.

Under 19 & Under 17 Rep Trials Draw Big Numbers
The Netball Bay of Plenty Under 19 Coach Teresa Pou and Under 17 Premier Coach Megan Lacy were delighted but at the same time overwhelmed by the large number of triallists who turned out for the first trial held. "There was excellent communication among the coaches and a great feel about the first night," said Megan Lacy. Players were put through a testing programme and then went into a series of trial games.

The region has set up a mentor training programme with the age group rep coaches and managers on a much more formal basis for 2011. At this stage mentors and coaches are pleased with the leadership/coaching programme that will offer training for mentors as well as coaches. Jodi Tod and Mary Jane Araroa have been assigned a group of coaches each to work with.

Success for Group of Young Players
Samantha Sinclair has been named in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Team that will compete in the Trans Tasman Secondary School Netball Tournament that will be held in Porirua from May 31 to June 2. The young midcourter from John Paul College in Rotorua has had a stellar start to her year. Called into the Bay of Plenty WRAS Exchange Team in January she went onto make the Bay's Lois Muir Team where she had some excellent game time.

The Aoteroa side that competes in the Trans Tasman event has also been selected and the Bay of Plenty has four of its young players in this side which id a first class achievement. Simmon Howe (Opotiki), Jaydene Law (Rotorua, Toia Tiwha (Te Puke), and Tawari Vercoe (Rotorua).

"This is the result of a lot of hard work by a number of people who have contributed to the development of these players," said Jodi Tod. "We just have to continue our planning and work with each of the individuals from that top Under 15 and above. The Lois Muir Challenge is a great event for bringing on young players along with the other parts of our competitive development and development programmes."

Bay of Plenty Finish Third
There is much excitement among the the squad of Bay of Plenty players who played in the Lois Muir Challenge. "Who would have thought that we would finish third,"said Captain Tanya Lund. "As a team we have had a very unique relationship. The younger players said in our team debrief that they have not felt that there has been a senior group but that we have been one team. This was just so awesome."

There have been a number of the young players who have really stepped up over the competition and seized their opportunities to impress the coach. Stacie Niao (GD, GK) and Libby Drake(WD)have both learnt to manage their on court roles much more successfully.

Coach Carol Holt is delighted with the experience and is very proud of the way the side came together and played such a strong team game.

Lois Muir Finals Weekend Looms
For the young Bay of Plenty team holding onto their current third ranking is the keeping them focussed on Finals Weekend. The weekend will be held at the AUT and the team will come up against Otago on Saturday and Southland early on Sunday. "We need to hold onto what we have been doing well and stick to our game plan. It is important not to treat Finals Weekend any differently to any other weekend," said Coach Carol Holt. "Stacie Niao (pictured)has been playing some beautiful netball and Tanya Lund has been an oustanding leader in every sense for this young side."

The players will return to get on with their club and school netball before the age group rep selection programme begins in May.

Bay of Plenty Youngsters Performing Well
The Lois Muir Challenge Squad has provided some first class matches for the youngsters selected in the Bay of Plenty team for each match. The team has had 5 wins and 2 losses which is a better than anticpated result at this stage. Auckland Waitakere and Western are sitting at the top of the table on 24 points and Bay of Plenty are sitting on 21 with Otago on 17. "It is just so exciting to be in this position given that we have had some close encounters. These young ones are learning how to win and this is excellent preparation for the age groups and later in the year," said Coach Carol Holt. "It has been really good to see new squad members Stacie Niao, Libby Drake, Simmon Howe and Samantha Sinclair all benefit from court time that they have had. Toia Tiwha, Lyddia Moke & Harley Smith who have been part of the squad in the past have had higher expectations placed on them and this has been a good thing."

Each of the young players has had a game which has shown how good they can be. The challenge is now to be more consistent. The Team Management have enjoyed watching the team grow as a unit the photo shows.

Apprentice Coach Megan Lacy Delighted With Opportunity
Megan Lacy was offered the chance to be the Apprentice Coach with the Bay of Plenty Team for the Lois Muir Challenge and jumped at the opportunity.

"I just want to say thank you for the fabulous opportunity to be part of the Lois Muir Challenge team. I have always been happy working with the senior college players and U17 development girls and never appreciated the next level for the girls. However, the chance to observe the next step for these girls has been absolutely brilliant. As I have expressed to MJ and Carol in the last 2 days, the difference in coaching styles, communication and expectation at this level has again left my head ‘bulging with new knowledge’ and has given me that spark to continuously improve what I do at the college/U17 level. I want to my girls ready for this next level. This is a great idea and I hope that other secondary school coaches or rep coaches can have this opportunity. Even the chance to be on the bench with the team during the games has been great. Luckily I found my place as the ‘chief’ timer during the weekend and had my part in the team."

"I can’t thank MJ, Carol, Roger and Nikki enough for answering my questions or just taking a minute to talk me through the why’s of what is happening. The girls also have been great."

Lois Muir Challenge Underway in Fine Style
The Lois Muir Challenge got underway over the weekend and the standard of play was appreciated by the good crowd who were at Aquinas College in Tauranga to see some of the rising talent out on court. The five teams from the Upper North Island all showed glimpses of quality play for two of the the NNZ Selectors who were present to observe. For some of the younger players this was their first time in a much more physical and closely contested environment where umpires calls did not come, as and when, they expected them to.

First up the Bay of Plenty Team came up against Auckland Waitakere in a clash which was both physical and intense. Without their top two Centres available because of injury and illness the Bay experimented to see who would cover this spot going forward. Halana Leith a former Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic Goal Attack who has moved from the Waikato has found being moved into the midcourt a new challenge and so after playing WA with Toia Tiwha as centre she was moved into Centre. Leith combined well with young Simmon Howe at WA in the final quarter. The 53 to 48 loss suffered by the Bay of Plenty was disappointing but the learning was evident the next day when they played extremely well against Counties Manukau. Leith and Howe began where they left off and consolidated themselves nicely while Harley Smith shared the shooting load with Tanya Lund a lot better than the previous afternoon. Tanya Lund's leadership of the young players was admired by the coaching staff.

Libby Drake grew with every quarter in the WD role and won some excellent interceptions while Erena Mikaere (pictured) released from Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic duties showed what she had learnt within the franchise mix. The large scoreline enabled coach Carol Holt to give youngster Samantha Sinclair a run in the midcourt and Stacie Niao a chance on defence. The 73 to 38 win showed that the Bay of Plenty side had learnt form the loss the previous day.

Results
Auckland Waitakere 53 – Bay of Plenty 48
Waikato 66 – Counties Manukau 35
Auckland Waitakere 47 North 40
Bay of Plenty 73 – Counties Manukau 38
Waikato 64 – North 47

The next round will see all teams competing in Nelson following the shift from Christchurch because of the earthquake.

Season 2011 Launched
Stretching Further Together was officially launched following the AGM to a large audience at the te Puke Netball Centre that was drawn from around the Bay of Plenty. The new Vision, Purpose and Values were shared along with the overarching strategic outcomes that challenge the region and the centres to work together.

All met with strong support and applause from members which was pleasing for the Board who had ensured that their listening over the past three years was captured in the new plan.

The four key priorities are more people involved in netball; a stong investment in youth; being customer focussed and ensuring quality delivery; and most of al a professional and dynamic organisation. The emphasis on working together permeated the presentation which also saw Jodi Tod go through the use of the intranet to give all present the opportunity to become more familiar with the content and the way to utilize it effectively.

The strategic outcomes desired by 2014 are challenging but the commitment to do the best to achieve them is strong and as all departed it was clear there is a sense of determination about achieveing excellence.

Netball Bay of Plenty AGM Very Positive
The AGM was an extremely positve meeting that saw four of the long serving volunteers receive their Netball Bay of Plenty Service Awards. Madelon Izett, Louise Macdonald and Jenny Shaw from Netball Whakatane and Gail Wenmoth from Netball Rotorua were all surprised and overcome by the recognition which is held in high regard by all within the Region. All four have given 20 plus years to their Centres in a variety of roles. Madelon & Gail are both Treasurers with a meticulous approach to detail and have earned praise for their financial management from their auditors. Louise & Jenny have both been very involved in game development and the development of Netball Whakatane's facilities along with numerous other portfolios that they manage.

Three constitutional remits saw the Constitution tidied up and the elction of Board Members saw Jo Mayston and Sue Winters both re-elected. The annual investment that teams make in Netball Bay of Plenty was increased by $5 per team. The AGM was followed by dinner and then the presentation of the new Strategic Plan and marketing documents.

The Bay of Plenty team will play Auckland Waitakere at 5:30pm on the Saturday evening. "We have a much younger group than last year," said Coach Carol Holt, "with an average age of 19 this would be the youngest side we have to date and this is a reflection of the age trend for the region this year with a strong group of Secondary Students moving on for tertiary education."

Coach mentor Mary Jane Araroa is eager to hold onto the guiding pronciple of using the event to develop players and "if nothing else we will have a group of players who will be fitter than they have ever been before if they continue training hard. This is a positive then for the rest of the season.Players like Harley Smith and Lyddia Moke will be challenged with stepping up and taking leadership roles to support Tanya Lund and Laura Macdonald."

Strong Support for the Tactix Home Game in Rotorua from the Bay
Bay Trust, Sport Bay of Plenty, the Rotorua Energy Events Centre and the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union all got in behind the match that was played at the Rotorua Energy Events Centre. The game was recognized as a home game for the Canterbury Tactix but this did not deter people from getting in behind Netball Bay of Plenty who ran the operational and marketing side of the match for the displaced Tactix. "It was the least we could do to support the Canterbury Tactix given what they had been through as a team over the past two weeks and we believed that it was the best possible way to do something tangible to show our support and that we cared," said NBOP CEO Sheryl Dawson. "But what impressed me most was the way all of these Bay of Plenty organisations got in behind the push to have as many people as possible go to the game at such short notice. It was really all about a first class team effort."

The First Windows Magic won the exciting match that went into one extra time 63 to 56.

Lois Muir Challenge Bay of Plenty Squad Tested
The pre season trip to Palmerston North for the first group of players chosen from the squad was very worthwhile according to coach Carol Holt. "Tanya Lund took on a strong leadership role for the team and she really put her hand up on court and Rebecca Connelly was our most pleasing surprise of the weekend," said Carol Holt. "Toia Tiwha, Libby Drake and Stacie Niao were also strong on court which is very pleasing to see."

This is a great bunch of girls who are beginning to gel together really well.

Lois Muir Challenge Squad Has New Faces
The Lois Muir Challenge Squad from which 12 players will be chosen for each round has fallen into place quite nicely. "The blend of age and experience has been a real positive for me as coach," said Carol Holt.

At the shooting end Tanya Lund and Harley Smith have Ashleigh Kate Araroa and Renee Whare to work with. "The midcourt has quite a large number of players working hard for their places because we have a number of players who have been shifted from defence or the goal attack positions," said Carol Holt. Halana Leith is a good example of a shooter moving into the midcourt along with Leah Maru Maru Flynn who has traditionally played defence.

Candyce Edwards and Amy Christophers will be joined by Erena Mikaere who is with Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic for some of the matches and they will work with Stacie Niao who is waiting to go on her volleyball scholarship to the USA and the youngster of the squad Amanada Harvey.

The range of midcourters is exciting with Lyddia Moke looking ready for the season along with Libby Drake, Toia Tiwha, Rebecca Connelly and Laura Macdonald. The NNZ Secondary School triallists Simone Howe and Samantha Sinclair (pictured in action in last years Baywide Open) complete 9 possible mid courters to be chosen from.

The team will have a pre season run in Marton before the event commences in Tauranga on March 19 and 20.

Curtain Raiser Sees Young Talent on Show in Rotorua
Playing netball in the heat of February alongside secondary school summer sport and the annual Kapa Haka event in Gisborne meant that some innovation was needed to find players for the curtain raiser to the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic versus the Southern Steel match. Two evenly matched teams were selected only to have one find itself losing players close to the day because of pressures from summer sporting codes and injuries.

"Naturally we were disappointed to have summer sports and injuries upset the balance created but those who saw the game live were delighted with some of the young talent on show and Bay of Plenty stalwart Taini Jamison thought the approach to the match was a 'jolly good idea'," said NBOP CEO Sheryl Dawson. "There are some lovely players out there on court and some have impressed me with their nice touches and skills," said Taini.

"It was a great to have the chance to step up despite not having played since August last year and a really good opportunity to get the head into thinking netball because for many trials are about to begin," said Jodi Tod. "Libby Drake spoke really well for the group of players involved from the Bay of Plenty and so we are very proud of her for taking on that responsibility."

Lois Muir Challenge Squad To Be Finalized
Choosing the Lois Muir Challenge Squad each year for the Bay of Plenty is always one that requires a lot of thinking and most of all balancing between youth and experience. Carol Holt and Mary Jane Araroa along with apprenctice coach Megan Lacy have been gradually working their way through what each player will bring to the group if they are an experienced player and what they will bring if they are young player. Once the final squad emerges there will be 12 players chosen for each weekend that the event takes place.

"It has been exciting to watch the young ones work in this environment up until now and it will come down to achieving that balance that we aim for with our guiding principles," said Mary Jane Araroa who is mentoring the group.

Umpires Prepare For Testing
Netball Smart Coordinator Megan Crockett spent an evening with 17 umpires going over training for umpires on a hot January night during the Summer Camps. Umpires came from around the Bay of Plenty to learn more about how to bring together their pre season training programme and how to better prepare themselves for the Yo Yo Test which is used as a bench mark for the NNZ Regional Award and above.

"This will all fit rather nicley with the training programme that Netball Bay of Plenty is organising for the more elite umpires with the Lois Muir Challenge Squad players," said Lyndsay Meads. "Umpires need to be as fit as possible and for some the beep test has not accurately reflected where they are and it appears that the Yo Yo will solve this. It seems to remove the fear that the beep generated which is a real positive."

Strong Start to Season with Pass It
Netball Bay of Plenty has made a strong start to the season with a group ready and trained to deliver the Pass It programme into Primary Schools. "It seems hard to believe that the first sessions will be delivered in early February. This is something very new for us,"said Jodi Tod, "and it adds quite a different pressure to our start of year with more staff in the field to meet the needs of this programme. We are very excited to be included in this ground breaking fundamentals skills programme and we hope that we will be able to evolve the Pass It area."

Newly arrived Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic players Jamilah Gupwell and Juliana Naoupu will join the team of the deliverers which includes Arahi Wall, Lucy Whale, Harley Smith & Lyddia Moke. Jodi Tod acts as the coordinator for NBOP. (Photo - Jodi Tod in action supported by Arahi)

Advanced Camp Challenging
Advanced Summer Camp placed strong emphasis on fitness, strength and conditioning along with thinking about the game. Observing the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic training challenged the young players to watch the on court movement of those players who are their role models who played in their playing positions. They were also asked to rate an individual Magic player on a number of attributes which they had, had to rate themselves on. This forced the young players to try and think realistically about themselves and the gap that existed between them and their role model. The final challenge was the match where without warning the two camp teams were told their match ended in a draw and they had to go into over time. This was really scary said Alice Mc Fall. Suddenly every pass, every catch and every movement seemed so much more important than in the previous four quarters.

We felt that this would not only be good for the players but also the coaches said Arahi Wall. It is important that we prepare for every eventuality and this was a great time to use. It is also interesting that the players became much more attentive about their approach - they need to play in every game as if they are playing over time.

Rain & Wind No Deterent for Summer Camp
Twenty nine eager young women and one young man make up the player numbers for the Centre Pass Summer Camp being held at Mount Maunganui from Janaury 23 to Janaury 25. "Every year we have more people wanting to be there than we have places for," said CEO Sheryl Dawson, "and this year is no exception."

Arahi Wall is leading both camps with the support of other Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic players Juliana Naoupu and Jamilah Gupwell who will run specific sessions. Jodi Tod is one of two coach mentors, the other is Bay of Plenty Gold Coach Mary Jane Araroa."Our job is to work with the coaches who have come to the camp to gain further professional development around the delivery of skill work, fitness sessions, game planning and the approach taken to coaching during a game," said NBOP Coach Development Manager Jodi Tod. "Quite challenging really."

Megan Crockett the Netball New Zealand Netball Smart Coordinator will deliver the strength, fitness and conditioning sessions on day two of the camp.

Pam Clayton Has Role With Samoan Umpires
NBOP Umpire Panel Leader and NNZ Umpire Panel Member Pam Clayton has been appointed to carry out a role with umpires in Samoa from January 16 to 23. She will work with the umpires on their approach to the game and help with the systems that need to be put in place and the training of the umpire coaches who are needed to get the practicing umpires to the required standards. "I am really looking forward to this challenge. It is very exciting and I know I will learn from this experience as well," said a delighted Pam prior to her departure. (Here Pam in white is see receiving her New World Game Official Highly Commended Award from Mount New World's Melanie Rudkin.)
